Youth Jazz Ensemble
Rebuilding Community Through Music and Dance
We are launching a new Youth Jazz Ensemble in Midland for students who are passionate about music and eager to grow as musicians and dancers.
This program brings dedicated young musicians together to rehearse as a swing band, learn swing dancing, and prepare for a joyful annual end-of-school-year Swing Dance Gala — a special prom-style celebration open to homeschool and community families.
Program Overview
- Fall Session: 15 weeks
- Spring Session: 12 weeks
- Students learn swing-style jazz music and swing dance fundamentals
- The season culminates in a festive Swing Dance Gala
What We’re Looking For
Participants should already be playing an instrument and able to read music and commit to regular home practice. Students will learn at least 2 songs per session and collaborate with others in a band setting. Parents are asked to actively encourage consistent practice at home.
A Timeless Tradition
Throughout history, communities across all cultures have gathered to make music and dance together. From the social dances of Western Swing during the Bob Wills Era, the Big Band Swing Era, the social dances of the Chickasaw and other Native American tribes, to barn dances, and the respectable 1950s dance halls, these shared experiences strengthened social bonds, taught grace and etiquette, and provided healthy outlets for energy and creativity. We believe reviving this tradition for today’s youth is deeply important.
Community Support Needed
As we launch this new program in Midland, we are currently seeking a suitable practice space. If you have access to a church hall, community center, school space, or other suitable venue and would like to support this effort, we would love to hear from you.
